The high-tech Welding Technology program focuses on welding processes performed in all positions on both plate and pipe. You will learn proper safety methods, required math, related skills, layout and fit up, welding codes and standards, welding inspection, testing, and drawing/welding symbol interpretation. The first year, students will complete AWS Level I standards for an entry level welder. The second year will take students toward AWS Levels II and III—advanced welder and expert welder. Additional techniques, such as high-pressure vessel, high-pressure pipe, and ship fitting will be taught, as well as other advanced welding techniques. The welding technology program is taught according to the standards set by the American Welders Society (AWS) and is AWS-certified.

The Electrical Construction and Maintenance Electrician program provides in-depth instruction in the theories and principles of electricity. Principles of operation for electrical devices and equipment, and correct and safe operation of tools are covered. You will study and learn to interpret and apply the requirements of the National Electric Code for designing electrical layouts, installation methods, and the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical circuits and equipment. Practical (hands-on) application of the classroom theory is the main emphasis of the laboratory work. Approximately one-third of lab time is spent on actual work sites, gaining real-life work experience. In your senior year, you will create completely automated projects in the lab using PLCs, pneumatics, electronics, and process controls.

Technology program features instruction in the safe operation of all basic machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, various saws, and grinding equipment, as well as proper measurement and inspection of parts. Interpreting engineering drawings and mathematical calculations required by all machinists is also presented. The second year includes shop math and CNC (Computer Numerical Controls) programming with an emphasis on hands-on skills using advanced machine tools. A strong emphasis on shop safety is an integral part of the program. The AOS degree program includes operation of CNC lathes (turning centers), and CNC milling machines (machining centers, including setup and operation of the machines, and interpreting engineering drawings and control documents. The understanding of quality control and how to conduct appropriate measurements and inspection will be integrated into the course work.

Energy Utility Technology

Technology program introduces students to the energy utility industry through classroom and laboratory experiences that focus on electrical generation processes; power plant systems and functions; transmission and distribution of natural gas and electric power; natural gas fundamentals and codes; metering principles and safety and emergency responses. This certificate program is designed to fill a critical need for qualified entry level workers in the energy utility industry. Job opportunities exist for overhead and underground line workers, meter workers, field service technicians and sub-station maintenance workers.

The Mechatronics certificate program trains technicians in multi-craft skills and applies them within a manufacturing environment. Mechatronics is a new and emerging career that trains technicians with multi-craft skills and applies them within a manufacturing environment. Skills taught include electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, robotics, and computer technologies. Mechatronics technicians who support advanced manufacturing will usually assist the design, development and engineering staff, as well as work closely with others to install, maintain, modify and repair mechatronic systems, equipment and component parts. The goal of the Mechatronics certificate program at Erie Community College is to prepare students for employment as production technicians in manufacturing locations throughout the Buffalo-Niagara Region.

CNC Precision Machining

The CNC Precision Machining certificate program is designed to prepare students for employment in the precision metal working industry with academic course work, hands-on skills and advanced manufacturing processes required by business. Upon completion of this program students will be able to enter or advance in such fields as mold making, model making, die making, machine repair and computer numerical control (CNC) machining. Students are prepared for employment in both large manufacturing corporations and small precision machining companies. Graduates can continue their education in industrial technology, engineering or business programs leading to jobs in management. The design of this program will enable a student to be qualified to do entry-level machining work after completing just two semesters.

Mechanical Engineering Technology A.A.S.

Northland is partnering with the Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance (BNMA) and SUNY Erie Community College to launch Western New York’s first "Earn While You Learn" model for enrollees of the SUNY Erie @ NWTC’s Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) AAS program for the Fall 2021 semester. All courses will take place at Northland. Northland Workforce Training Center (NWTC) is offering a "Jumpstart" program for those students enrolling in the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) AAS program in the Fall 2021 semester. The intent of this 2-week pre-requisite is to establish the necessary foundational knowledge to participate in a 2 year "Earn While You Learn" program combining full-time enrollment in SUNY Erie’s Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) AAS degree program and simultaneous employment at a Buffalo Niagara Manufacturing Alliance (BNMA) company. NWTC will recruit and enroll twenty-four students in this intentionally inclusive program ensuring equitable access to our diverse student population.

Automotive TechNICIAN
The Automotive Technology certificate program at NWTC is offered through SUNY Erie Community College and is for two semesters. The objective of the Automotive Technology Certificate is to prepare graduates for the challenges of the auto industry. Course offerings are available during the day or evening. Students learn about vehicle maintenance services, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, engine performance, and repair facility operations. Coursework is complemented with many hours of hands-on experience in a fully equipped, up-to-date facility. Graduates of the Automotive Technology Certificate Program are eligible for positions as quick lane technicians, entry level repair technicians, parts associates, and service consultants.
